Furthermore, it is responsible for marketplace governance by providing support services, defining terms and conditions, and deciding on admission and withdrawal of datasets or participants. As the importance and potential of data is more and more acknowledged, data marketplaces are emerging as a new type of business offering. Their goal is to make data usage possible in a seamless and automated fashion, bypassing the need for complicated back-office contracts and agreements. A data marketplace can be cross-domain or domain-specific (i.e. dealing with data of interest to specific use cases and industries). Their main duty is to make data easily discoverable (based on a set of standardised data models) and to provide transparent tracking of all data-related transactions (from who used what data at what point in time to revenues generated from sharing data).
